Deux Amis was created in the midst of Lalan’s “Landscape Metaphor” phase (1970 –1983). Seeking a new artistic language almost twenty years after first picking up a paintbrush, Lalan undertook a profound re-examination of her Chinese roots. Travels to Europe’s famous mountains were supplemented with studies of Song Dynasty literati paintings and the Taoist text Zhuangzi, which ponders the state of “Heaven and Man in unity”. Deux Amis captures Lalan’s liberated inner world, with a latent cosmic energy evoked in soft tones of yellow, violet and blue and gentle rhythmic lines - a reflection of the artist’s enlightened consciousness and introspective approach to life.
